Rewarding Your Staff with Employee Certificates Can Go a Long Way
Lots of employers make the mistake of thinking that a kind word or gesture will not make a difference in a workers day. That could not be further from the truth. There have actually been surveys conducted in several fields and one of the last things that employees noted to make their job better was more money. Two of the highest ranking things were better equipment and more recognition.
Now where the mistake comes in is that most employers think that employees want a raise as recognition. While that would be nice, most workers realize that raises are only given out once a year, if at all in the current economy. Another mistake that is made is that employers don’t realize that people can get the same aggravation somewhere else, you have to make them want to come to work.
Something that will get that attitude is giving them a little extra and you can do that in the form of employee certificates that they can cash in for rewards. These certificates can be cashed in right away for things like movie tickets or they can be held longer and used for electronics or travel vouchers.
Travel vouchers are actually a great way to reward your employees. Think of the maintenance worker or chamber maid at a hotel. How much do they make an hour? Maybe $9-$12? They are probably struggling to put food on the table and a real vacation is something that they cannot realistically ever take. That was at least until you started the employee certificate program.
You can make the grand prize each year a cruise travel voucher to give everyone extra incentive. The staff member that gathers the most certificates over the course of the year can win the travel voucher. You can also buy several other travel vouchers that will give away exotic weekends and trips to other locations. While your staff thinks you are spending thousands lining up these exotic little getaways, you are only spending a few hundred.
The important thing here is the perception and the good will that it creates in the work environment. Your staff is being immediately recognized for their good work in the form of the employee certificate, and then they are being rewarded again when they get to cash them in for the trip. The best part about a program like this is even the staff that does not win the trip feels good about it. They are not only happy for the staff member that wins the trip, they are also proud to work at a place that treats the staff so well.
For very little money you can give your staff a reason to come to work every day. Offering a simple travel voucher for the employee certificates will have a positive trickle down affect that you cannot possibly imagine. Giving your staff a $.25 raise will not get them to Hawaii, but an employee certificate that can be cashed in for a travel voucher will. |
